Members,

SLPOA was made aware of comments from the command staff last weekend regarding officer overtime and salaries. These comments have been addressed with the chief’s office, and we have been assured that they do not reflect the department’s position.

Overtime funding is included in the Police Department’s annual budget.  Commanders have discretion to address district needs and allocate personnel through overtime funds as appropriate.  We encourage all members to manage overtime responsibly and follow all applicable laws and department policies, recognizing that violations may result in discipline.

While police officers and sergeants are eligible to work overtime, state law limits command ranks from doing so in the same manner.  Commanders are compensated at significantly higher rates than officers and sergeants and recently received a substantial salary increase from the Board of Police Commissioners, which SLPOA supported.  Participation in the promotion process has always been voluntary and undertaken with an understanding of its impact on overtime eligibility.

SLPOA supports officers and sergeants having the opportunity to work overtime, and we appreciate that the department provides this option to help protect the community and support fellow officers.  Commanders should value subordinates who are willing to help address staffing shortages, rather than disparage their efforts.  Instead of veiled threats of discipline or repeated jealous remarks directed at them, the hardworking rank-and-file members who form the backbone of this department deserve appreciation and gratitude.

SLPOA is grateful to all officers who volunteer their time to fill patrol assignments, work details, or otherwise support public safety and assist fellow officers during this staffing crisis.

Fraternally,

The SLPOA Executive Board
